Pumas, stationed temporarily at Warwarowka, were alerted at 0300 (approach
of a large Russian formation). 5/1. v.sz. was retained for a/f defence but
5/2. was dispatched against the attackers.
Pair Kenyeres hdgy. and Kalman fhdgy. took off at 0330 and went into action
immediately. La-5 fighters turned away from the attacking 109s and Hungarians
then attacked Il-2 aircraft. After firing a burst, Kenyeres sharply turned,
giving an opportunity for Kalman to shoot an Il-2 at the end of formation.
By now the Soviet protecting fighters returned and forced a pair of 109s to
flee. Kenyeres lost sight of his wingman. Suddenly he saw another lone Hungarian
fighter which also flew without wingman. It was Kovacs törzs. in V.041.
Kenyeres tipped his wings, indicating to Kovacs to take up the wingman position.
Together they joined up with three German fighters patrolling nearby. A short
time later they attacked formation of eight Il-2s and Kenyeres managed to shoot
one of them down.
Kenyeres related:
At the east end of town (Charkow probably) appears a large amount of AA pom-poms.
This is the best guide. Here a red-starred a/c must be. Four Russian ground-attack
a/c are approaching the city [...] in calm closed formation in spite of murderous
fire. We fly over burning debris.
-- I shot this one down -- said my wingman -- and the other one a bit farther.
Great! He has already two aerial victories. I dive on the Russian formation.
The AA batteries continue their fire. [...] We are interested now only in the
four red-starred a/c. Then I see that I, myself, miscalculated. Behind the
four Russian a/c were another four, flying. I dove between the two formations
but luck was smiling at me again. The machine on the left side peels off from
the rest and I after it. [...] The Russian pushes close to the ground and escapes,
hopping over trees. [...] On the right of me three Germans are chasing it too.
One of the germans dives on it but does not succeed in bringing it down. It
is now my turn. I pull up a little and, from the side, I aim ahead of the engine.
I am not opening the fire yet. It’s still too far. Now I press all the
buttons. I pull up in an instant to avoid colliding. I skid out to the right.
I get on its left side again and from above and behind I shoot the cockpit.
The Russian gunner, by now, does not return the fire. From a close distance
I open up with the cannon. The machine shudders and catches the ground with
its right wing tip. It slides along a creek, burning.
On July 5th, the Hungarians claimed five victories.
